What to Expect During Your First Acupuncture Consultation

Trying acupuncture for the first time can feel a little intimidating—but it doesn't have to be.

At Saco River Acupuncture & Wellness in Biddeford, Maine, our goal is to make your first visit comfortable, informative, and completely personalized. We believe that understanding your health story is the first step toward helping you feel better.

Step 1: We Listen

Your consultation begins with a conversation—not needles.

We'll spend time discussing:

  • Your primary health concerns

  • When your symptoms started

  • Previous treatments you've tried

  • Your medical history

  • Current medications and supplements

  • Lifestyle factors like sleep, stress, digestion, nutrition, and exercise

  • Most importantly—your goals. What would feeling better allow you to do?

You may be surprised by some of the questions we ask. Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at the body as an interconnected system, so symptoms that seem unrelated often help us understand the bigger picture.

Step 2: We Determine If You're a Good Candidate

Not everyone who schedules a consultation is automatically a candidate for acupuncture treatment—and that's okay.

Our job is to determine whether we believe we can help you or not. If we don't think our services are the best fit for your condition, we'll do our best to point you toward another provider who may be better suited for your needs.

Our priority is always recommending the care that's right for you.

Step 3: You'll Receive a Personalized Treatment Plan

If acupuncture is appropriate, we'll explain exactly what we recommend.

We'll discuss:

  • Which therapies are best for your condition (acupuncture, dry needling, estim, massage, aesthetics, etc)

  • How often we recommend treatments (acute conditions may be 12 treatments or less; chronic conditions can expect between 12-40 treatments)

  • Approximately how long your care plan may take

  • What results you can realistically expect

  • Costs and insurance questions

Unlike a quick "one-and-done" treatment, acupuncture works by encouraging your body to heal over time. Just like physical therapy or strength training, consistency matters. Your treatment plan is designed specifically for your condition, goals, and lifestyle.

Step 4: Your First Treatment (Often the Same Day)

In many cases, if you're ready to get started, we'll perform your first acupuncture treatment immediately following your consultation.

The treatment itself can be incredibly relaxing.

Most patients are surprised by how comfortable acupuncture is. The needles are hair-thin, and many people barely feel them. Once they're in place, you'll rest quietly for about 25–35 minutes. Some patients even fall asleep.

Afterward, many people report feeling deeply relaxed, sleeping better that night, experiencing less pain, or simply feeling like they can take a deeper breath.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment

To help you get the most from your visit, we recommend:

  • Eat a light meal or snack at least an hour beforehand.

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

  • Bring a list of your medications and supplements if needed.

  • Come with questions—we're happy to answer them.

We Believe Great Care Starts With Great Conversations

Your consultation isn't just about determining where to place needles—it's about understanding you as a whole person.

Whether you're seeking relief from pain, headaches, stress, digestive issues, fertility concerns, or another health condition, we're here to listen first and create a plan that's tailored specifically to you.

If you've been wondering whether acupuncture could help, we'd love to meet you.
